The Toyota Hilux GD6 – the truck that’s been making waves and turning heads everywhere it goes! I mean, what’s the deal with this rugged ride? The way it’s been so hyped has made it sound like it’s the ultimate off-road rockstar, with a reputation that precedes it like a drumroll. Everyone, I mean everyone, is talking about it, from the toughest truck enthusiasts to the most seasoned adventurers. Worse in my native country, Zimbabwe, maan! This car has become a focal point, igniting heated discussions nationwide, especially after allegations, well, as legend has it, that some folks went to the extent of trading off their fifth toes just to own the beast, hilarious, right? I’m literally trying hard to hold back my laughter right now haha. Anyway, the allegations turned out to be malicious and a mere hoax. But like everyone else this really got me fascinated, what’s behind this hysteria? What is it about this four wheeled monster that commands such frenzy? Is it the raw power, the unstoppable torque, or the unbridled freedom it promises? Whatever it is, today we will dig all the way down to its bottom, so please, I need you to hold tight and follow me closely as we explore the most recent one as at July 2024, that is the 2023 model released in February of the same year.

History of the GD6
Firstly, we need to de-mystify and clear the fog around the ‘GD6’ phenomenon: contrary to the popular perception that the GD6 is one of Toyota’s car models, it’s actually an engine code used by Toyota to identify a specific family of diesel engines. The “GD” part stands for “Global Diesel”, while the “6” represents the sixth generation of Toyota’s global diesel engine family. Hence the GD6 is a 2.4/2.8-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine with the 2.4 liter (2GD-FTV) and 2.8 liter (1GD-FTV) variations. It was introduced in 2015 as a replacement for the older KD and HH diesel engine series. The engine was designed to be more powerful, efficient, and environmentally friendly compared to its predecessors. Toyota also designed the GD6 to be a global engine family, suitable for use in various markets and applications with minimum modifications. The engine features an advanced common-rail fuel injection system, a variable geometry turbocharger, and improved combustion chamber design.
The GD6 has been used in a variety of Toyota and Lexus models, including the Fortuner, Innova, Land Cruiser Prado and today’s focus, the Hilux. It has been praised for its strong low-end torque and good fuel economy. Overall, the Toyota GD6 is a modern, high-performance diesel engine that has helped Toyota maintain its reputation for reliable and capable diesel powertrains.
Design and styling
The 2023 Hilux GD6 model naturally catches the eye with its updated and refined design. Compared to the previous model, the front end has undergone a striking transformation, with a bold new grille and a prominent Toyota emblem that instantly commands attention. The sleek, angular headlights give the Hilux a more modern and premium look, while the sculpted body lines add a sense of dynamism and visual interest to the overall silhouette.
Step inside the cabin, and you’ll be greeted by an even more impressive interior. The layout is incredibly intuitive, with controls that fall readily to hand, and the use of high-quality materials, like soft-touch surfaces and premium-grade plastics, creates a truly upscale ambiance. The seating position is exceptionally comfortable, offering excellent visibility and a commanding view of the road ahead – perfect for navigating both on-road and off-road adventures. Toyota has really raised the bar, blending rugged capability with refined, contemporary style.
Performance
The Hilux delivers a truly impressive performance package that caters to a wide range of driving needs. Under the hood, you’ll find a choice of powerful engine options: the robust 2.8-liter turbodiesel that pumps out an average of 201 horsepower and a staggering 369 lb-ft (500Nm) of torque. And, of course, the 2.4 liter variation that oozes out an average of 142 horsepower and 295 lb-ft (400Nm) of torque.
Both engines are reputated for their reliability, fuel efficiency, and improved emissions. The 2.8 liter is popular for its balance of power and fuel efficiency, while the 2.4 liter is often preferred for its lower displacement and reduced emissions. They can be paired with either a smooth-shifting six-speed manual or a responsive six-speed automatic transmission along with either a 4×2 (two-wheel drive) or 4×4 (four-wheel drive) configuration, depending on the specific application and market. All configurations offer a responsive and engaging driving experience.
Out on the road, the Hilux’s handling is nothing short of exceptional, with precise and well-weighted steering that inspires confidence, even when tackling tight corners. The suspension setup does an excellent job of soaking up bumps and undulations, providing a comfortable ride quality that makes long journeys a breeze.
When it comes to towing and off-road capabilities, the Hilux truly shines, with a generous towing capacity and the ability to conquer challenging terrain with ease. Perhaps most impressively, the Hilux GD6 manages to blend all this performance with impressive fuel efficiency, with claimed figures as low as 7.9L/100 km for the manual model and 8.4L/100 km for the automatic model – numbers that hold up well in real-world driving conditions.
Technology and Features
Packed with a wealth of advanced technology, this beast boasts of convenience features that elevate the driving experience. At the heart of the cabin is the streamlined infotainment system, which brags an impressive array of capabilities. The large, responsive touchscreen display is easy to navigate, with seamless integration of features like navigation, smartphone connectivity, and a high-quality audio system that delivers crisp, immersive sound. Connectivity is further enhanced with options like wireless charging and a suite of USB ports, ensuring your devices stay powered and connected on the go.
But the Hilux’s technological prowess extends well beyond the infotainment system, with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that contribute to enhanced safety and convenience. Features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and blind spot monitoring work tirelessly through their respective dashboard signals to help you stay aware of your surroundings and react quickly to potential hazards. Whether you’re embarking on a long road trip or navigating the daily commute, the 2023 Hilux GD6 is equipped with the technology and features to make every journey more seamless and enjoyable.

In fact, the Hilux boasts an impressive payload capacity, so you can load it up with all the gear you need without worrying about exceeding its capabilities. And the flexibility of the loading and storage options is truly impressive, with tie-down hooks and various accessory mounting points that allow you to customize the bed to suit your specific needs.
But the Hilux’s practicality extends beyond just the cargo area – the cabin is equally impressive, with a spacious and comfortable interior that caters to both the driver and passengers. The front seats provide ample legroom and headroom, ensuring a comfortable driving position, while the rear seats offer generous accommodations for your passengers to stretch out and relax. The overall quality of the materials and craftsmanship is top-notch, creating a refined and premium ambiance that belies the Hilux’s rugged capabilities.

The Hilux offers incredible value for its price, with a range of trim levels to suit different needs and budgets. The base model starts at around $26,000, while the top-of-the-line trim comes in at around $75,000. But what you get for any of the prices is a rugged and reliable pickup that’s built to last, with a comprehensive warranty package and low maintenance costs that make the long term ownership costs very low.

I have always loved the Hilux, I did own many years back an older model while I was staying in Venezuela for many months. Hilux has a very high rating always in my opinion, just being a Toyota vehicle helps it all the way. Another of my friends in the UK has a Hilux, which must be 7 years old, low mileage admittedly, but absolutely no problems with it at all.
In America The Hilux, is so similar to the Tacoma, it just has a more powerful engine and an upgraded interior, I wonder if the upgraded interior you mention is the same? the bigger engine helps towards its greater towing capability, but American engine options are always bigger, especially in trucks, a 3.5 Litre engine wouldn’t surprise me. Not as big as my 6,0 litre engine in my Hummer H2. Your review is making it very tempting for me to go and take a look at it. Great article
Hey Rob by, i’l definitely check on the Tacoma, American trucks are in a class of their own, I will actually make an article dedicated to them.
I really enjoyed your post! I have always felt that Toyota Trucks were solid vehicles. My parents owned one of the pickups offered back in the late 70″s I believe and I owned a 1966 land cruiser. The thing was an absolute tank! I had no clue that they had a truck with a diesel power plant. Is this truck considered a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton? I know Toyota has a one ton truck but I don’t know about the others. Have you actually taken a test drive? I am definitely going to look around an see If I can find one to see in person. I am definitely curious.
