Routine Checks to Keep Your Ride in Optimal Condition
Engine oil and filter change
Regular oil and filter changes are crucial for maintaining a healthy and efficient car engine. Oil acts as a lubricant, reducing friction between the moving parts and preventing wear and tear. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dirt and debris, turning into a sludge, leading to decreased lubrication properties. Changing the oil and filter at recommended intervals (5000 to 7500 miles/8000 to 12000km) ensures proper engine function, prolongs engine life, and enhances fuel efficiency. Neglecting the routine results in increased engine wear, reduced performance, and potential costly repairs. By prioritizing timely oil and filter changes, you can safeguard your vehicle’s longevity and ensure smooth operation on the road.
Tyre rotation and Inspection
Tyre rotation is the process of regularly switching the positions of tyres on your car, this is because the positions have different wear patterns. Hence regularly rotating the tyres ensures that wear is distributed more evenly, extending their lifespan and maximizing their performance.
Additionally, routine inspections can uncover issues like the uneven wear patterns, cracks, objects like nails and glasses that cause punctures, low tyre pressure which affects balance and fuel efficiency, or any other damage that could compromise driving safety. Tyres with worn out treads must be replaced, always have a good spare wheel available, and don’t forget to go for wheel balancing and alignment whenever you put new ones. By incorporating tyre rotation and inspection into your maintenance schedule, you can ensure optimal tyre performance, improve fuel efficiency and promote a safer driving experience.
Brake system inspection
Arguably the most vital safety feature on a car, regular brake system inspections are essential for ensuring safe and reliable vehicle operation. Over time, brake pads wear out, brake fluid may become contaminated or depleted due to leakages and brake components can deteriorate, compromising braking performance. Through routine brake system inspections, these potential issues can be identified and appropriately rectified, preventing brake failure and ensuring optimal braking efficiency. Prioritizing brake system inspections in car maintenance helps maintain the safety of the driver, passenger and other road users and saves lots of money.
Battery and charging system check
Regular checking of the battery and charging system is pivotal in car maintenance to ensure reliable performance and prevent unexpected breakdowns. A healthy battery and charging system are essential for starting the vehicle, powering electrical components, and maintaining overall functionality. The battery water level must be checked in 3 month intervals, and topped up if it is low, and the terminals must be regularly checked for tight connections and in case of acid spillage and the build up of residue (the green and white staff on the terminals) an alkaline mixture of hot water with either baking soda, vinegar or bleach can be used to clean it off and prevent them from erosion. Battery terminal cleaning sprays can also be used. Conducting the regular checks ensures that issues such as a weak battery, faulty alternator, or electrical system malfunctions can be prevented or detected early, saving time and money.
Air filter replacement
This is is a critical aspect of vehicle maintenance that often goes overlooked. Air (specifically oxygen) is needed by the combustion engine to burn fuel and generate the power that revs it up and brings it to life, hence a clean air filter is essential for optimal engine performance, fuel efficiency, and overall longevity. Over time, air filters can become clogged with dirt, dust, and debris, restricting airflow, causing incomplete fuel combustion which results in high emmision of exhaust fumes and putting a strain on the engine. By replacing the air filter at recommended intervals, typically every 12000 to 15000 miles/19000 to 25000 km, you can be assured of proper air intake, improved fuel economy, and reduced emissions, ultimately prolonging the life of your vehicle, maintaining peak performance and making it more environmentally friendly.
Coolant system flushing and refilling
The coolant system in a vehicle plays a fundamental role in maintaining optimal engine temperature and preventing overheating, which can lead to costly engine damage, it also prevents freezing under extremely cold temperatures. Over time, the coolant, a mixture of distilled water and antifreeze at mostly 50:50 ratio, can become contaminated with rust and other debris, reducing its effectiveness. The anti-freeze increases the mixture’s boiling point, allowing it to efficiently absorb the heat produced by the engine, it also decreases the mixture’s freezing point to prevent it from freezing at extremely low temperatures. Depending on the driving routine and age of the car, the coolant level must be regularly checked normally between weekly and monthly, and topped up if on or close to the low level mark. It’s not advisable to top up the coolant reservoir with water unless it is an emergency. Water dilutes the mixture and weakens the coolant properties, making it unable to properly safeguard the engine against extreme temperature conditions. The recommended interval for flushing and refilling of the coolant system is after 30000 miles/42280 km, this helps to remove the contaminants, ensuring proper heat transfer and corrosion protection. Neglecting this maintenance task can result in decreased cooling efficiency, engine overheating, and ultimately engine failure.
Windscreen wiper and fluid check
Regularly checking the condition of windscreen wipers and fluid is important for safe driving. Worn-out wiper blades can reduce visibility during rain or snow, compromising safety and increasing the risk of accidents. Keeping the windscreen wiper fluid reservoir filled ensures a clear view by effectively cleaning dirt and debris from the windscreen, and worn out wipers must be replaced in order to maintain clear visibility in various weather conditions.
Exterior lighting inspection
Inspecting the exterior lights of a vehicle is a necessary aspect of car maintenance that directly impacts safety on the road. Properly functioning headlights, taillights, brake lights, fog lights, reverse lights, turn signals and even tag lights (the license plate lights) are essential for visibility to other drivers, especially in low light or adverse weather conditions. Burned-out bulbs or faulty wiring can reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents. Regular inspection and replacement of exterior lights ensures that the vehicle remains visible to other road users, aiding in accident prevention and overall road safety.
Suspension and steering inspection
The suspension and steering components of a vehicle are key for ensuring a smooth and safe driving experience. Regular inspection of these systems is vital as worn-out or damaged components can lead to poor handling, uneven tire wear, and compromised safety on the road. A faulty suspension can result in a bumpy ride, reduced stability, and difficulty in controlling the vehicle, especially during turns or sudden maneuvers. Similarly, problems with the steering system can lead to steering wheel vibrations, drifting, or difficulty in steering, affecting the driver’s ability to navigate the vehicle safely. By conducting routine suspension and steering inspections as part of car maintenance, you can identify these issues early, address them promptly, and maintain optimal driving performance and safety. The good thing is that usually the suspension and steering components visibly and audibly manifest any anomalies on their own. Audible disturbances emanating from the suspension system or indications of misalignment in the steering mechanism serve as early warning signals, prompting you to schedule a comprehensive inspection of the system.
Cabin air filter replacement
Regular replacement of the cabin air filter is indispensable for maintaining clean air inside the vehicle cabin. The cabin air filter helps to trap dust, pollen, pollutants, and other airborne particles, improving the air quality for occupants. A clogged or dirty cabin air filter can reduce airflow, lead to unpleasant odors, and trigger allergies or respiratory issues. By replacing the cabin air filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, you can ensure a healthier and more comfortable driving environment for yourself and your passengers.
Engine compartment belts inspection
Regularly inspecting the engine compartment belts is a crucial part of your car’s maintenance routine. These belts should be checked for signs of wear, cracks, or looseness. Proper belt tension and condition are essential for the reliable operation of your vehicle’s critical systems.
The number of belts in a car can vary depending on the vehicle’s make, model, and engine configuration, but generally, a car can have one of the following belt configurations:
1. Single Serpentine Belt
Many modern cars have a single serpentine belt that drives multiple accessories, such as the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and water pump.
2. Multiple Belts
Some older cars or vehicles with simpler engine designs may have multiple individual belts for the various accessories such as a fan belt (for the cooling fan), a power steering belt, an alternator belt and an air conditioning belt.
3. Combination of Serpentine and Individual Belts
Some vehicles may have a combination of a serpentine belt and one or more individual belts, such as a serpentine belt for the majority of the engine accessories and separate fan belt for the cooling fan.
Addressing any belt issues promptly can help prevent unexpected breakdowns and ensure your car runs smoothly, cracked and worn out belts must be promptly replaced.
Adapting Your Car Care with the Seasons
Switching gears, let’s consider how changing seasons influence car maintenance. The reality is, different weather conditions demand specific precautions to ensure your vehicle runs smoothly and safely all year round.
When winter’s frost sets in, preparing your vehicle becomes critical. A robust battery ensures your car starts on cold mornings, and the right antifreeze level is a must to prevent engine freeze. Tires also need a check; consider winter or all-season tires for better traction.
Come summer, the focus shifts to keeping your engine cool under the scorching sun. Maintaining your radiator system and ensuring your air conditioning is up to par becomes paramount. Constantly monitor tyre pressure too, as heat can cause it to fluctuate, affecting handling and fuel consumption.

Very useful stuff there.thank you for the tips
Every car treads on the thin line between 2 classes namely assets and liabilities, that thin line is regular maintenance. If maintenance is not done properly, or worse still not done at all, your car becomes a burden and a liability, but when it is timeously maintained, it becomes a valuable asset.
Every car owner will find this checklist on how to do general maintenance on their car, very helpful. With the cost of a breakdown on a car, one can help prevent a breakdown if you do general maintenance on your car.
Checking the oil level in your car, is one of the very first lessons that I learnt when I started driving a car. And the second lessons that I learnt, was to check the tyre pressure on a regular basis. You have mentioned so many more tips on this checklist, that I will certainly include when doing general maintenance in the future.
I’m glad you found the checklist helpful, they say a stitch in time saves nine, regular and timely car maintenance saves a lot of money by attending to issues before they even become potential hazards.
Being in the car industry for over 35 years the one thing I can tell you is maintenance of your car is not optional. People make it much harder than it is. Having a routine and a good checklist like the one you provided is essential. Doing simple maintenance can not only extend the life of your car but also possibly prevent you from sitting on the side of an interstate broken down. Cars will breakdown even with good maintenance and that’s bad enough, but imagine being stuck on the road late at night after a hard day because of something simple, like a bad battery. Especially when a good maintenance program would have found that and prevented your breakdown. Great article. The only thing I would add to the list is to check the belts for cracking and/or wear. Hopefully you will have inspired people to take a little better care of their cars… Dennis
Hi Dennis, thank you soo much for the additional tip! I personally had an awful experience once when the serpentine belt got torn apart whilst I was on the highway and running late, and there was no spare available. I had to endure a stressful detour and wait for the new belt, I wouldn’t want anyone to go through the same experience, I will definitely add it to the list, thank you once again.
Great article! Regular car maintenance is indeed crucial for ensuring longevity and reliability. Your detailed checklist is beneficial. One question: How often do you recommend thoroughly inspecting the suspension and steering systems? Are there specific signs we should look for to know it’s time for a check-up? Thanks for sharing these valuable tips!
Suspension and Steering component checks depend mainly on the age of the car and driving conditions. The interval for someone confined to city and highway driving is different from someone who has to course through rough and rugged terrains. The components normally report for themselves, if they start making even the slightest abnormal sounds, or probably the steering starts to show slight signs of misalignment, that should tell you that it’s time to go for a check, a stitch in time will save nine agonizing ones.
